The Bechtler Museum is home to several programs that promote arts in underserved communities. One of the programs is Jail Artis Initiatives, a program that provides opportunities for both incarcerated adults and youth at Jail Central and Jail North to learn about art. Led by Bechtler-trained teaching artists and staff, the program is comprised of 12-week long residencies occurring throughout the year. During the residencies, inmates learn about various artists and their themes while also learning to paint.

Overall, the Initiative has had a positive impact on the participants. One of the consistent comments about the program is that it provides inmates with an outlet to express their emotions. This outlet has translated into improved behavior among facility inmates.
